Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a medical term originating from the Greek words for “women-like breasts”, and is very common in males, affecting 40 to 60 percent of the population. The condition is frequently found to have an unknown cause, and may affect one or both breasts. The best candidates for reduction surgery are healthy, fit men who are not obesely everweight.

The surgery can involve liposuction and or excision of excess glandular tissue. It generally requires general anesthesia, and is performed on an outpatient basis. There is little down-time with this surgery, and the patient can typically return to work within one week.

Results of gynecomastia are permanent although later weight gain can create a gynecomastia-like appearance. The benefits of this surgery are a firmer and flatter chest with a more natural contoured look.
